Audition

Information

  • This is an ensemble consisting of string instruments only (violin, viola, cello, bass), and is highly recommended for all incoming freshmen who wish to enroll in the NHS Orchestra Program. However, it is not limited only to the freshmen class.

    No audition needed (however, strongly recommended for students with previous instrumental and ensemble training experiences)

  • This is an intermediate level symphonic orchestra that is open to all grades and open to all symphonic instruments (Strings, Wind & Brass, Percussions, Harp, and Piano).

    Audition requirements (No more than 7 minutes of total video footage):

    • One 3-octave major scale and one 3-octave melodic-minor scale, with slurred 1/8-note triplet at quarter note = 60 (Wind/Brass: 2-octave scale is accepted)

    • One 3-octave major arpeggio and one 3-octave minor arpeggio, with slurred 1/8-note triplet at 1/4-note = 60

    • Two solo excerpts of contrasting styles (fast/slow), or one solo piece that contains two contrasting sections.

  • This is our most advanced orchestra that mainly focuses on standard and major symphonic works. Open to all grades and all symphonic instruments.

    Audition requirements (No more than 10 minutes of total video footage):

    • Two 3-octave major scales and two 3-octave melodic minor scales, with slurred 1/16- note sextuplet at 1/4-note = 60 (Wind/Brass: only 2-octaves for scales)

    • Two 3-octave major arpeggios and two 3-octave minor arpeggios, with slurred 1/8-note triplet at 1/4-note = 60

    • Two solo excerpts of contrasting styles (fast/slow), or one solo piece that contains two contrasting sections.

  • This class is designed for those students who wish to challenge themselves with chamber music studies such as Duet, Trio, Quartet, Quintet, etc. This class requires strong solo and ensemble skills and a strong desire to build more chamber music experience. Open to all string instruments and as well as wind & brass.

    Audition requirements are the same as the Symphony Orchestra’s.

  • This is an ensemble consisting of instruments such as trumpet, guitar, vihuela, guitarron, violin, viola, cello, bass, harp, and as well as all wood wind instruments, accordion, and voice. It is highly recommended for all incoming freshmen who wish to enroll in the NHS Mariachi Program. However, it is not limited only to the freshmen class.

    No audition needed (however, strongly recommended for students with previous instrumental and ensemble training experiences)

  • With the same instrumentations as the Mariachi Ensemble 1, this is our advanced Mariachi ensemble that will take on standard and advanced Mariachi repertoire. Open to all grades.

    Audition requirements (No more than 10 minutes of total video footage):

    • Two solo excerpts of contrasting styles (fast/slow), or one solo piece that contains two contrasting sections.

Concert Attire

OASIS (Orchestra Advisory Student-Initiative Society) – OASIS is an innovative community of hardworking student leaders, whose goal is to create a fun, structured, nurturing, and proactive culture of responsible students. OASIS’ members have a common goal of seeking to maximize Niwot’s orchestral programs’ growth.

MACHO (Just MACHO) – This is a student lead leadership team that focuses on enriching the Mariachi culture in the NHS community. Meetings usually involves fun activities, live music making, and delicious homemade food.

Parents’ Section - The Parents' Section of the Niwot High School orchestra catalyzes the greater Niwot community to engage with and support the orchestra in creating high-quality, inspirational music and building valuable life skills

Sinfonia

Ladies: White top (dressy long or short sleeves, no tank-top); all black bottom (long dress or pants); Black dress shoes with covered-toe (no sandals)

Gentlemen: White top (long sleeved button-down dress shirt); Black tie; All black bottom (black belt, black dress pants, black dress socks, black dress shoes)

Conservatory

Ladies: Green top (“Niwot Green” or close to it, dressy long or short sleeves, no tank-top); all black bottom (long dress or pants); Black dress shoes with covered-toe (no sandals)

Gentlemen: Niwot green top (“Niwot Green” or close to it, dressy long or short sleeves, no tank-top); Black tie; All black bottom (black belt, black dress pants, black dress socks, black dress shoes)

Symphony

Ladies: All Black (dressy long or short sleeves, no tank-top, long dress or dress pants, black dress shoes with covered toe, no sandals)

Gentlemen: All Black (long sleeved button-down dress shirt, black tie, black belt, black dress pants, black dress socks, black dress shoes)

Pro Arté

Dress code can be varied as long as it is unified within each small ensemble and approved by the director
